about the school

Shermay's Cooking School is where several of Singapore's award-winning and celebrity chefs and cookbook authors conduct cooking classes. The school also has a retail shop that stocks a wide range of practical, difficult-to-find but affordable items such as Valrhona chocolate couverture, blow torches and souffle baking dishes.

With access to professional kitchen gadgets and fine foods, a few practical tips and tried-and-tested recipes, you should be able to cook like a chef and replicate gourmet dishes in your own home in no time!

about the chefs
Each Guest Chef is carefully selected by Chef-Owner Shermay Lee for their teaching ability, sound technical knowledge and culinary experience. Most of our chefs have 10-15 years of cooking experience - some in 3-Michelin star kitchens in Europe - are Executive Chefs of their own restaurants or award-winning cookbook authors (see below).

We have a wide range of chefs teaching an international range cuisines such as Singaporean (traditional and modern), authentic Peranakan/Nonya, Southeast Asian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Italian and French. We are particularly committed to preserving classical or 'old school' Asian techniques and recipes; however, we also teach modern Asian and Western cuisine reflecting the latest trends in the culinary world. Dessert and pastry enthusiasts will enjoy our Cupcake and Chocolate Workshops, as well as baking classes taught by professional pastry chefs.

about the classes
Our classes/workshops are designed to make cooking accessible, easy and fun for novice as well as advanced chefs, so students of any culinary ability and background are welcome!

A stainless steel state-of-art kitchen, fully-equipped with De Dietrich induction technology is used to conduct classes in a professional demonstration kitchen; however, the recipes are designed to be replicated in a domestic kitchen. Classes are usually conducted on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons.

There are 2 formats: a step-by-step cooking demonstration by the chef followed by food tasting, or hands-on cooking by the students supervised by the chef with a box of food to take home. (Check our latest schedule for details.)

founded in 2003
Founded by award-winning cookbook author, Shermay Lee, she owns, manages and is also a culinary instructor at the school. She focuses mainly on traditional Singaporean cuisine, which includes Peranakan/Nonya, Chinese, Malay, and popular 'hawker' or 'street food' favourites. She teaches her grandmother's traditional recipes which have been handed-down to her over the generations, as a way of preserving this dying art. She is also classically trained in French cuisine at Le Cordon Bleu (London), and teaches Western cuisine as well as desserts.

"I started this school because I wanted to provide classes that are affordable and fun but also genuine a learning experience. The school is also a platform to showcase and nurture local award-winning chefs and cookbook authors...a chance for individuals of any culinary ability to learn practical tips from professional chefs, making them better cooks or simply to inspire them..." Founder & Owner, Shermay Lee
