How to Grate Safely & Properly:
- Hold the fruit in one hand or on a stable surface such as a cutting board and the grater in the other.
-
Grate the zest from one part of the fruit, moving only the grater then rotate the fruit before making the next pass with the grater. In this manner, the amount of bitter white pith will be minimized.
-
Continue around the fruit with the grater held above the fruit. Holding the grater above the fruit keeps the grated zest in the hollow of the grater and also allows you to see what part of the fruit you have already grated.
-
Overturn the grater then gently tap the zest directly into the mixing bowl or a measuring bowl, use as required.
(
For hard cheeses, we recommend the conventional method of moving the cheese over the grater and letting the grated cheese fall directly onto the food or a measuring/mixing bowl.)
